Belt
What is a weightlifting belt?
A weightlifting belt, also known as a training belt, powerlifting belt or fitness belt, is a highly functional training accessory designed to make lifting heavier loads easier. The aim is to protect the body from injuries, especially to the lower back and intervertebral discs.
Depending on its use, it is a belt with different widths. For example, in a weightlifting competition, the maximum width of the weightlifting belt must not exceed 12 cm. However, wider products are also manufactured for various purposes, such as powerlifting or bodybuilding.
When lifting heavy weights, training belts made of leather or sturdy synthetic materials are usually used. These are worn tightly during use in order to increase the internal abdominal pressure.
It is precisely this process that ensures increased stability. During breaks, the weightlifting belt is usually taken off or at least loosened.
What are the advantages of a weightlifting belt?
The advantages of using a weightlifting belt are particularly beneficial for advanced strength athletes who work with very heavy weights. Deadlifts and squats are the most common training exercises where a weightlifting belt is used.
In particular, the protective function of the weightlifting belt during regular very high loads, as is the case with powerlifting for example, makes it a useful addition to training.
Due to the increased internal abdominal pressure, weightlifting belts also help to move more weights. This is certainly a great advantage in a competition situation.
