Herbal medicine is as old as mankind itself and is the most original approach to healing.
The healing power of nature, which is available to humans and animals in the form of a wide variety of medicinal plants, has proven its worth for thousands of years. Phytotherapy, as it is also known, is the treatment of diseases and ailments using plants or parts of plants and their preparation. It can also be used preventatively and has an effect on both the physical and mental/emotional levels.
Possible applications of medicinal herbs
Medicinal herbs are used in various forms. When applied externally to the skin, their effect unfolds in ointments, gels, creams and oils. Depending on the composition and concentration of the herbal ingredients, there are products for daily skin care or for the treatment of skin diseases. However, the healing effects of herbs can also be utilised in toothpastes, mouthwashes, hair care products and bath additives. In the form of bath additives or massage oils, the blood circulation of the skin and muscles can be stimulated, which is helpful for sports injuries or tension, for example.
Essential oils are of particular importance. These plant-based ingredients are responsible for the scent of a plant. Plants with essential oils such as z.B. sage or thyme usually have an inhibitory effect against germs and are therefore often used to treat infections. Due to their chemical nature, essential oils can easily enter the body via the skin or mucous membranes of the nose or mouth, where they can exert their effect on individual organs. Aromatherapy utilises the knowledge that essential oils also influence emotions and moods via their effect on the brain. While lavender z.B. has a calming and sleep-promoting effect, rosemary is known for its stimulating effect, which also promotes concentration. Pure essential oils are very expensive as their extraction is very time-consuming. (Z.B. 5000 kg of rose petals are needed for 1 litre of rose oil). They can be recognised by the label "100% pure natural essential oil". In Germany, aromatherapy for the treatment of complaints and illnesses may only be carried out by doctors or alternative practitioners with appropriate training.
For internal use, herbs can be consumed as freshly pressed juices, tinctures or tea preparations.
