Gi care
Your gi is subjected to a lot of wear and tear during training. To ensure its longevity, we have a few care tips for you here that can help you to enjoy your BJJ suit for many years to come.
Of course, you should wash your Gi thoroughly immediately after training. Please don't get the idea of training a second time in a kimono that is already sweaty from the previous day. The special proximity to your training partner in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu means that you should pay particular attention to the hygienic cleaning of your tracksuit. If in doubt, buy a second gi in case you forget to wash it or simply can't do it in time.
Ideally, cotton gis in particular should only be washed at 30 degrees and, if possible, on a special cotton programme in your washing machine. However, some blended materials can sometimes withstand higher temperatures.
As bacterial growth and unpleasant odours are difficult to wash out of a well-used gi at 30 degrees, it can be advantageous to wash it with special antibacterial detergents, as with regular sportswear.
Don't forget to turn your kimono inside out before washing to protect the materials. Although it may sound a little strange, you can do more damage to your kimono in the washing machine than on the training mat.
Last but not least, you should avoid tumble drying your gi if possible. This hardens the fabric and makes it unnecessarily stubborn and scratchy. In the worst case scenario, it may even be a few sizes smaller afterwards. Plan enough time to leave your suit to dry on the washing line. A second Gi can also be an advantage here to bridge the cleaning time.
