The ounces depend on the weight class of the boxer and the intended use. They become proportionally larger the higher the ounces.
These weight estimates are purely indicative and are intended to provide a theoretical point of reference.
The choice of glove size also depends on the desired use of the glove (intensity, frequency and type of training) or on the protection you require (the heavier the glove, the more foam layers protect the fist).
Do not hesitate to ask your coach for advice if you are unsure.
Boxing Glove Guide
How big should boxing gloves be?
Boxing gloves are usually sold without a size, so only experience or advice will help. Here are a few points you can use for orientation:
- European and American brands (Leone1947, benlee, Everlast, sting) are larger than
- Thai brands (Twins, Fairtex, Venum) are very compact.
There may be differences depending on the model. It's best to enquire with us or pop into one of our shops to try them on.
A heavier boxing glove of the same model is usually slightly larger.
How should boxing gloves fit?
Gloves must fit like good shoes, they must not pinch anywhere and you must not touch the leather with your fingertips as the gloves will quickly wear through there. A glove that is too big can be adjusted with longer boxing bandages.
What do boxing gloves cost?
The range is huge. Cheap boxing gloves for fit boxing are available from around 50 francs. Everything is open at the top. You can get a solid leather boxing glove for proper boxing training from around 100 francs.
How long do boxing gloves last?
It depends on the wear and care. In professional sports, boxing gloves are usually worn out after about six months. This means that the padding has been compressed so much by repeated punches that it no longer provides sufficient cushioning. If you don't notice this yourself, your sparring partners will notice at the latest when it starts to become uncomfortable. Boxing gloves last longer with less use.
What to wear under the boxing gloves?
Always the right boxing bandages! Inner gloves are also sufficient for fitness boxing. But it's best to learn how to tie bandages right from the start. When training on the punching bag and sparring, always use wraparound bandages.
Why bandages under boxing gloves?
Boxing bandages have two functions:
firstly, they should absorb the sweat, then the boxing glove lasts much longer and stinks less, but more importantly: bandages should stabilise the hand and protect it from injury, this also applies to training on the punching bag - the rule here is: never train without wrapping bandages!
Cleaning and storage
Protect the boxing gloves from moisture and wetness. Always wear with bandages and store in a dry place. After sport, open the fasteners wide and allow the gloves to air out well so that perspiration can evaporate. If gloves become very wet, stuff them with paper or similar. Clean by hand with lukewarm water or a mild detergent solution.
Thoroughly remove cleaning agent residues with a damp cloth and wipe dry with a soft cloth. Allow to dry at ambient temperature in a well-ventilated room. Never leave outdoors overnight. Avoid heat sources and extreme temperatures. Never use chemicals, paint thinner, petrol, alcohol or harsh cleaning agents for cleaning, as these can damage the surface. Treat leather with a suitable, colourless care product.
Can boxing gloves be washed in the washing machine?
You should avoid washing boxing gloves in the washing machine. The upper material (leather or nowadays mostly plastic) would become brittle and could even tear. For this reason, machine washing is not usually recommended by the manufacturers.
A damp cloth with a little soap is all you need to wash or clean the upper material. If you follow the tips and, above all, always dry your boxing gloves consistently after every training session, there will be no problems with odours so quickly.
