The idea that boxing is a sport exclusively for men has long been consigned to history. Boxing is also a sport for women that can be effective on several levels.
The sport, which has a long tradition, can offer women the following benefits:
Boxing is a quick and effective way to get your body in shape and build muscle.
Your ability to react improves through boxing and you build up a holistic body tension. Because you can be 'attacked' by your opponent at any time, your body is tensed so that you can react quickly to an attack. You can also find out more about reactivity, punching power and speed in boxing in our article Learning to box.
Boxing helps to improve your ability to concentrate, as you always have to keep an eye on your opponent.
Last but not least, you are doing something good for your psyche, because regular boxing training helps you to achieve more balance in everyday life.
In general, there are a few things that all fans of active boxing should bear in mind when buying gloves.
First of all, you should be aware of the type of boxing you are choosing, as the boxing gloves will vary depending on this. A decisive criterion is the material of the glove, here you should make sure that it is a strong and high-quality material, such as leather, so that you can wear your boxing gloves for a long time. The inner material is also important; it should be of such good quality that it absorbs the blows of your hands well and does not cause you any pain.
Depending on which type of boxing you choose, your boxing gloves will need weights. These differ in weight, which in turn is measured in ounces.
And last but not least, size is of course a very important point to consider when buying your glove. In the next section, we explain how you can find the right size and the right unit of ounces of a glove for your hands.
OZ / ounces and the size of boxing gloves
The size of the boxing gloves is variable and you should find the right size for your hands so that your gloves fit well. This means that they should not be too loose, but of course not so tight that they hurt your hands.
For boxing gloves, both the number of ounces, i.e. the weight of the weight in the glove, and the size must be taken into account. The unit of measurement ounces is abbreviated to oz.
To measure the correct size of your boxing glove, you can simply measure the part of your hand that is the widest. You can convert the cm into the boxing glove size here, for example: https://www.blitzrechner.de/boxhandschuh-groesse-berechnen/
On this page you can also see some examples of weights in the ounce unit of measurement. As a general rule, one ounce equals 28.35 grams. You can base the weight on the use of your boxing glove. For example, the smallest number of 8 ounces is considered a good weight for children's boxing gloves, while a number of 8-10 ounces is used for a competition in Europe.
When sparring, i.e. boxing with an opponent and training, you should use a number of ounces between 12 and 14.
Boxing gloves women
Boxing gloves for women do not differ significantly from those for men. The only important thing is that the boxing gloves are cut for narrow women's hands. Very few manufacturers take the trouble to adapt the cut. We present some models below. With a little trial and error, you can of course also box with a "men's glove" that suits you.
There are also different types of women's boxing gloves for different types of boxing. A rough distinction can be made between training on a punching bag, sparring, i.e. training with a real partner, and competition. For training on the punching bag, it is advisable to use so-called "punching gloves". These are characterised by a flexible thumb, which means that the thumb is not sewn onto the glove, allowing you to remove the glove from your hand on your own.
On the other hand, the "punching gloves" have less padding on the inside, which makes them more flexible in the hand but also allows you to feel the punch more so that you can improve it more effectively. For sparring, boxing gloves are used that are both more compact on the outside and have more cushioning on the inside so that both you and your boxing partner do not take the full impact of the punch.
Similar gloves are used for competition as for sparring, but they are usually even better padded both inside and out. And the thumb must be sewn onto the competition gloves. Generally speaking, boxing gloves for women are only available up to a size of 12 ounces, but women have a greater choice of colours and designs.
Leather boxing gloves are well suited for women's training, as this material is the most robust and still remains supple. The widest part of a woman's hand is usually between 17.5 and 22.5 cm, which corresponds to a glove size of M or L.
Boxing gloves for women for fitness boxing
All types of boxing gloves can be used for fitness boxing, which is also known as shadow boxing or pratfalls, as long as they are the right size. This means that boxing gloves for women or men can be used as well as those for children. The weight range for fitness boxing should be 8 to 10 ounces.
Boxing gloves for women ambitious boxing - 10 OZ boxing gloves
For boxing with real opponents, whether in training or in competition, it is important to choose gloves that have good padding on the inside so that the blows are cushioned and you don't injure yourself.
In addition, a glove made of a strong and high-quality material is highly recommended, as otherwise it may wear out quickly. For ambitious boxing, you should use a maximum weight of 10 OZ. As a rule, more is not permitted.
Are children's boxing gloves suitable as boxing gloves for women?
Women who have very small hands and wrists can also use children's boxing gloves. The only thing to note here is that the gloves must not be too small and that children's gloves are usually available in an ounce size up to 8 OZ. If this is too small for you, you should opt for women's gloves or boxing gloves for teenagers.
In addition, children's gloves are usually more heavily padded, which is good for sparring or competitions, but the impact feedback for training is lost as a result.
