The double-ended ball is a boxing ball suspended on two ropes that is ideal for training your punching technique, reflexes and endurance. This training device is suitable for beginners as well as advanced boxers and in this article we would like to introduce you to the most important aspects of the double-ended ball and explain what is important when buying it.
While the boxing ball and the standing punching ball are well known beyond the boxing scene, the double-ended ball is rather unknown. In my opinion, however, this is unjustified, as it is an excellent training tool for increasing your flexibility, stamina and concentration in boxing.
Basically, it is a ball similar to a medicine ball that has a loop at the top and bottom to which a rope can be attached for hanging. These ropes are rubber ropes that are then attached to the ceiling and floor so that the ball hangs at the optimum height for striking.
Thanks to the two rubber ropes, the double-ended ball flies backwards after each hit and then forwards again towards the boxer. The strength of this swing depends on the force of the punch and the tightness of the rubber ropes. For this reason, the boxing ball is ideal not only for advanced boxers but also for beginners.

Size and weight of the double-ended ball
Basically, the double-ended ball is similar in size and weight to the other two representatives of this category. In contrast to the speed ball and the punching ball, however, the shape is rounder and not as pear-shaped or teardrop-shaped as the others.
As a rule, the balls have a diameter of 25 - 30 cm and weigh 1 - 2 kg. They are suspended using the two loops or hooks at either end of the ball. The height of the entire training device is determined by the length of the rubber ropes, which can be attached to beams, the ceiling or a boxing station.
Make sure that you attach the ball at the optimum height so that you can hit it comfortably. Even if this may sound simple at first, you will realise during your first training session at the latest that the double-ended ball has a life of its own and likes to "hit back" from time to time.
In addition to size and weight, there are other points you should consider when buying a punching bag. These include, for example, the assembly, the space required and important accessories for boxing training.
Filling and casing material of the punching bag
The two ropes are usually made of rubber so that they can optimally convert the punches into a swinging motion. In contrast to a normal punching bag, swinging is expressly encouraged with this training device.
As with the boxing ball and the standing punching ball, the double-ended ball is filled with air. The same applies as with the speedball:
The more air there is in the double-ended ball, the harder the feedback.
When inflating, you should be careful not to pump too much air into the inner balloon. It is better to take it easy and try it out more often to see whether the degree of hardness is to your liking. If the balloon should ever break, this is no reason to throw the entire ball away. The cover can usually be opened at the top and the inner balloon easily replaced.
Nowadays, the cover is very often made of artificial leather. This is perfectly justified because the ball itself is not subjected to such high loads. However, if you are more interested in high quality or retro style, there are also models made of cowhide, which are a little more expensive.
Purchase criteria for double-ended balls
As already described, it is important to pay attention to certain dimensions so that training can be carried out effectively.
We recommend a diameter of approx. 20 to 30 cm; overall, however, anything over 20 cm in diameter can be rated as good.
Depending on the training requirements, the material used is also important.
When buying, make sure that the coat material is either made of real leather or high-quality artificial leather so that you can also deal out hard blows.
Equally important, and unfortunately often forgotten, are the accessories. Of course, you can buy a cheap double-ended ball for around €25, but this usually does not include the rubber ropes or any other mounting material.
If you already have a boxing station or a corresponding floor anchor and ceiling hook, this is of course not a problem.
In general, you should not order the cheapest double-ended ball from an unknown manufacturer on the Internet. Unfortunately, boxing equipment such as boxing gloves, punching bags and even double-ended balls are produced very cheaply in India or China. These then reach the European market at favourable prices and ultimately cause frustration among users.
Therefore, please always check customer reviews and testimonials before buying so that you are spared this frustration.
Our recommendations
We can particularly recommend the Leone Double End Punching Ball Leather
This model is an extremely high quality model made of genuine leather and from brand manufacturer Leone Leone1947. Just like the materials used, the workmanship is also first class.
The great retro look is also captivating and makes for a real eye-catcher in any boxing room, where great boxing legends could have trained.
At around CHF 130.00, this double-ended ball is not exactly cheap, but in our opinion it is well worth the investment. Both beginners and advanced boxers will get their money's worth with this model!
