Although eleventh place at the Mr Olympia 2019 was an improvement on the previous year for David Hoffmann due to the larger overall field of participants, the bottom line was that he could not have travelled back to Germany with maximum satisfaction. Although he didn't make it into the top ten of the Classic Physique, there wasn't much time to mope, because after the trip to glamorous Las Vegas, it was straight on to the next competition to make up for his performance just over a week ago.
The Yamamoto Cup was scheduled for yesterday, Sunday, in Padua, which was being held for the first time this year and promised to bring some top-class athletes to the stage, at least in advance, due to its proximity to the Mr Olympia. However, this was not really the case in the Classic Physique, as ultimately only three IFBB pros found their way from Las Vegas to the much less spectacular Italy. The 5,000 US dollars distributed as prize money among the top 3 did not necessarily serve as an incentive to make the gruelling journey.
One of the three athletes in question was David Hoffmann, who once again finished in eleventh place at the 2019 Mr Olympia and saw the Yamamoto Cup as an opportunity to showcase his improved form. The fact that he succeeded in doing so is shown not only by the sparse footage of the competition to date, but also by the result. The bodybuilder, who is currently sponsored by ESN, won the bronze medal in Padua with a noticeably optimised appearance. It seems as if no risks were taken with the loading this time, which may also have been due to the fact that coach Roland Cziurlok was on site.
Alex Cambronero finished the Yamamoto Cup in second place. The US-American with roots in Costa Rica also impressed in Italy after the Mr Olympia. While the IFBB Pro trained by Neil Hill had to settle for sixth place in Las Vegas, he was now able to make it onto the winner's podium. However, even the former 212 athlete was unable to get past the clear winner of the competition.
t was already more than just a guess that Breon Ansley would triumph in Padua. After all, the two-time Olympic champion of the Classic Physique turned up at the Yamamoto Cup with a good dose of frustration, having lost his title to Chris Bumstead just eight days ago. Accordingly, the 38-year-old made absolutely no compromises, left nothing to chance and secured both the gold medal and the cheque for 3000 US dollars.
The Classic Physique at the Yamamoto Cup definitely did not reveal any ground-breaking insights. Thanks to his two titles in Las Vegas, Breon Ansley is eligible to compete for life anyway, which is why the victory in Padua can be categorised as "nice to have". David Hoffmann and Alex Cambronero, on the other hand, scored the first points for the Mr Olympia qualification, but will have to compete in more competitions to be able to compete with the crème de la crème of their guild again in around a year's time.
