Boxing is inspiring more and more people. And for good reason. Because this sport trains body and mind in equal measure. If you want to box properly, you definitely need the right equipment. Whether sparring, training on a punching bag or a real boxing match: suitable boxing gloves protect our hands from serious injuries.
Weight of boxing gloves - ounces / grams
Boxing gloves are differentiated by weight, the unit of measurement is ounces. As England is the mother country of boxing, English ounces (28.35 grams) are used and not American ounces.
Simply measure hand circumference
To determine the glove size, measure the hand at the widest point. If you don't have a tape measure, simply use a piece of string and read off the length using a ruler or folding rule

Why boxing gloves are necessary
Boxing gloves are part of a boxer's protective equipment. You need them to protect your own hands, but also to protect your opponent's face from serious injuries. Of course, swelling, black eyes and bloody lips are inevitable when using boxing gloves. However, the padding of the gloves minimises such injuries.
Before a boxing novice steps into the competition ring, they must first practise. In addition to comprehensive fitness training, boxing training also takes place on the punching bag to learn and practise the punching technique. For this training, boxing gloves provide the perfect protection for the hands to prevent injured knuckles and abrasions.
In addition, padded gloves absorb the energy that acts on joints, tendons and bones on impact. If you want to avoid broken fingers, overstretched tendons, broken hair and splintered bones, you should definitely not do without boxing gloves.
What types of boxing gloves are there?
A basic distinction is made between competition gloves, training gloves and punching gloves.
Training gloves are also known as sparring gloves in technical jargon.
Punching gloves are used for training on the punching bag or punching ball.
Competition gloves are laced and must have an exact weight specified by the rules. The weight of boxing gloves is specified in ounces, whereby 1 OZ corresponds to exactly 28.35 grams.
First boxing gloves for training on the bag: the punching gloves
Punching gloves are used for training on the punching ball or punching bag. These differ from competition gloves in that the thumbs are not sewn on. This feature allows the boxer to put the gloves on and take them off independently. The padding is also thinner than in conventional boxing gloves. This gives the trainee stronger punch feedback and makes it easier to improve their punching technique.
Not every boxer uses boxing gloves for training on the punching bag. However, punching gloves can prevent unnecessary injuries and abrasions to the hands.
Sparring gloves for training with a partner
"Sparring is training with a real partner. There are special boxing gloves for this purpose, which are much thicker than punching gloves. The good padding of the mittens serves to protect yourself and your training partner. The curvature of the glove is larger at the front than that of the punching glove.
Sparring gloves are therefore very similar to competition gloves. Sparring gloves can also be used for training on the punching bag. However, the training feedback is less intense with such heavily padded boxing gloves.
Competition gloves for advanced boxers
Only when the boxer enters the competition ring does he need competition boxing gloves. The thumb is usually sewn onto these mitts. This protects the opponent's eye better and minimises the risk of injury. In addition, competition gloves are usually lighter than mittens for training.
When selecting competition gloves, certain standards prescribed by the respective boxing association must be met.
These standards describe whether the thumb must be sewn on or how thick the padding may be. The material of the padding can also be part of the regulation for competition gloves used.
Another feature of boxing gloves for competition can be the way they are fixed to the wrist.
In most cases, the competition glove must be fastened with laces. Competition gloves are usually clearly labelled as such by the manufacturer. They are usually more expensive and weigh more than 10 OZ.
How to choose the right type of boxing glove?
As already mentioned, there are three different types of boxing gloves for classic boxing: Punching gloves, sparring gloves and competition gloves. There are also special boxing gloves for children. In most cases, the boxing gloves differ in weight and size. However, they should primarily be selected according to their intended use, i.e. for training on the punching bag, for training with a partner or for competitions.
When buying competition gloves, it is important to check the rules of the governing body beforehand. Punching gloves can also be used for training with a partner and sparring gloves for practising on a punching bag. However, it is advisable to buy boxing gloves for a specific purpose in order to benefit from the respective advantages.
Select boxing gloves according to size and weight
Once you have decided on the type of boxing glove, you need to find the right size. In most cases, boxing gloves for adults are offered in one size. This is because the hands of adults differ only minimally, which is not an issue with such large mittens. There is only a difference in size between men, women and children, as women's hands are narrower and children's hands are smaller.
So you don't choose a specific size, but look for models for women, men or children to find the right pair. However, there is a difference in the weight of boxing gloves. Children's boxing gloves are usually between 6 and 8 ounces in weight.
Punching gloves for training are available in the 8 to 18 OZ weight class. Sparring gloves can be considerably heavier at 8 to 18 OZ. On the other hand, betting boxing gloves in Europe are usually between 10 and 12 OZ. Within this weight range, it depends on the boxer's preferences as to whether he prefers to wear a light or a heavy boxing glove.
Choose lighter or heavier boxing gloves?
Beginners should tend to choose the lighter boxing gloves, as the arms can become very heavy after the first 15 minutes of training anyway. For trained fighters, it can be worth training with heavier boxing gloves for a certain period of time, as this has a positive effect on strength. If the "normal" boxing gloves are then used in the fight, the fists fly almost by themselves.
Pay attention to the choice of material: Leather or imitation leather?
Boxing gloves are available in genuine leather and synthetic leather. Genuine leather is generally more robust. Boxing gloves made from real leather last longer and are simply more durable. Boxing gloves made of artificial leather are also quite robust nowadays, but they do not come close to the quality of real cowhide. They are significantly more expensive than artificial leather mittens.
On the other hand, you will sweat less in them and enjoy the gloves for longer. If you simply want to try out boxing and don't want to invest a lot of money in equipment at the beginning, you can also opt for inexpensive imitation leather boxing gloves. Otherwise, real leather boxing gloves are recommended.
Are boxing bandages necessary?
When buying boxing gloves, you should not do without boxing bandages or padded and shock-absorbing inner gloves. Such bandages provide additional protection for knuckles, fingers and thumbs and prevent perspiration. If you train a lot and hard and want to protect yourself and your boxing gloves, you should always wear boxing bandages.
Conclusion
Boxing gloves can be selected specifically for each intended use. The better the boxing glove fits, the greater your boxing success will be. Whether you wear bandages underneath is up to you. However, if you take boxing seriously and want to protect yourself as well as possible from injury, make sure you have the right equipment.
For almost every employee or worker, recording the time worked plays an important role. This is because it is used to calculate any overtime and the associated salary. To ensure that this is transparent, there is the so-called industrial time. Industrial time is used to make it easier to add up the minutes of an hour.
