Causes, Fixes & When You Should Replace Your Gloves
You’re ready to train, put on your boxing gloves – and suddenly the Velcro strap won’t hold anymore.
It slips, opens up, or barely sticks at all.
This is a common problem for boxers, kickboxers and Muay Thai athletes.
The good news: your gloves aren’t always trash right away.
In this article, you’ll learn:
- why the Velcro on boxing gloves stops sticking
- what you can do yourself to fix it
- when a repair makes sense
- and when you should replace your gloves for safety reasons
Why Does the Velcro on Boxing Gloves Stop Sticking?
In most cases, it’s not bad quality, but normal wear and training conditions.
The most common reasons:
1️. Lint, Hair & Fabric Fibers
Over time, Velcro collects:
- fibers from your gym bag
- hair
- bandage residue
The hooks can’t grip properly anymore.
2️. Sweat & Salt
Sweat dries, salt crystallizes:
- Velcro becomes stiff
- hooks lose their shape
- grip strength drops significantly
This happens especially with intense or frequent training.
3️ aterial Wear
At some point, the hooks are simply worn out or bent.
This happens faster with:
- cheap entry-level gloves
- daily training
- improper storage (Velcro left open in the bag)
Quick Fixes You Can Do Yourself
✔️ Clean the Velcro (often enough to solve the problem)
- Use a toothbrush, needle or tweezers
- Remove lint and hair manually
- Optionally rinse with lukewarm water and mild soap
- Let it air-dry completely (no heaters!)
In many cases, the Velcro grips much better afterward.
✔️ Refresh the Velcro
- Use a stiff brush
- Gently lift the hooks back up
- No heat, no hairdryer, no fire ❌
✔️ Check the Soft Side (Loop Side)
Sometimes the issue isn’t the hook side, but the soft loop material:
- smooth
- shiny
- flattened
If that’s worn out, even good Velcro won’t hold.
Long-Term Solutions
Replace the Velcro Strap
Worth it for high-quality boxing gloves:
- Shoe repair shops or tailoring services can do it
- Typical cost: CHF 10–25
- Especially useful for leather gloves
Temporary Training Fix
- Wrap hand wraps over the Velcro
- Secure with extra tape if needed
Not pretty – but it works.
When Should You Replace Your Boxing Gloves?
For safety reasons, new gloves are recommended if:
- ❌ the Velcro no longer closes securely
- ❌ your wrist is not properly supported
- ❌ the strap opens during training
Wrist support is not optional – it prevents injuries.
Loose gloves during bag work, pad training or sparring can lead to serious wrist or hand injuries.
Pro Tips from Vikingstore (Make Your Velcro Last Longer)
- Always close the Velcro before putting gloves in your bag
- Let gloves dry after every session
- Never leave them wet in your gym bag
- Clean the Velcro regularly
- Don’t pull or tear gloves open by the strap
Final Verdict: Repair or Replace?
- Clean or repair, if the glove is still structurally sound
- Replace, if safety and wrist stability are compromised
When in doubt: new gloves are cheaper than an injury.
